Preventative Dentistry

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid substance that is used in dentistry to help prevent and treat tooth decay.

SDF is applied to the affected tooth using a small brush or cotton swab. The silver ions in the solution help to kill bacteria that cause tooth decay, while the fluoride ions help to strengthen the tooth enamel and prevent further decay.

One of the advantages of SDF is that it can be used as a non-invasive treatment for cavities in young children or in patients who are not able to tolerate more invasive treatments, such as drilling and filling. SDF can also be used to treat sensitive teeth and to help prevent tooth decay in high-risk patients.

However, SDF does have some limitations. It can discolor the treated tooth, turning it black or brown, and it may not be effective in treating more advanced stages of decay.

Exams and Cleanings

Regular dental exams and cleanings help to maintain good oral health by removing plaque and tartar from the teeth, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated.

Our dental hygienists will also provide advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques to help keep your mouth healthy.

Nightguard

A nightguard, also known as a dental night guard or simply a mouthguard, is a device that is used to protect the teeth and gums from damage or injury. It is typically made of a soft, flexible material that is designed to fit over the teeth and gums.

They are used to prevent damage caused by grinding or clenching of teeth, a condition known as bruxism. Some people may wear a dental mouth guard at night to protect their teeth from the harmful effects of grinding or clenching.

Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride varnish is a type of dental treatment that involves applying a concentrated fluoride solution to the teeth to help prevent tooth decay.

The fluoride in the varnish helps to strengthen the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria that can cause cavities. The varnish also helps to reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth, which can further reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal therapy is a type of dental treatment that is designed to treat gum disease, which is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. Periodontal disease is caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth, which can cause inflammation and damage to the gums, bones, and other supporting tissues.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums, bones, and tissues that support the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to a number of oral health problems and complications, including:

  • Tooth loss: Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. As the gums and bone that support the teeth become damaged, the teeth can become loose and eventually fall out.

  • Bone loss: As periodontal disease progresses; it can cause the bone that supports the teeth to break down and become damaged. This can lead to significant bone loss and make it difficult or impossible to support dental implants or other tooth replacement options.

  • Receding gums: Periodontal disease can cause the gums to recede or pull away from the teeth, exposing the roots of the teeth and increasing the risk of tooth decay and tooth sensitivity.

  • Chronic bad breath: Periodontal disease can cause chronic bad breath that is difficult to treat with traditional oral hygiene methods.

  • Systemic health problems: Research has shown that periodontal disease is linked to a number of systemic health problems, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory disease.
